Welser Tiergarten, Wels, Austria

Half-day in the zoo/
A place to chill during a weekend or the evening with family

I am lucky that I can visit Austria as an exchange student through the project that my home university holds. It is a six-month project from February to July 2020. As we all know, in Europe, the pandemic gets more severe from mid-March, and it was fully locked down in Austria after one month. It is absolutely a hard time for everyone. However, with all the residents in Austria working carefully with the government, people were allowed to move around in Austria at the end of April.

With this good news, my friends and I couldn't wait to explore the city we live in. We google up what is around our dorm within walking distance. Surprisingly we found a zoo nearby, and it was totally free to enter. If you live near the city Wels or living in this city, this place is totally worth your 2 hours of attention. Search "Welser Tiergarten" on Google Maps and you can find it. Let's get started!!

If you're walking to this location, how do you know when you're nearby? Well, you can hear the chirping song of a bird probably several meters away from the entrance. Once you arrive, you will notice that the sound you heard is from the macaw. For me, I know Macaw only from youtube or the National Geographic channel. I guess from the video, the tone of the macaw was much lower than I can barely recognize. The pitch is so high, sharp, and loud.

There is one phenomenon that attracts me, which is there are many macaws in this park, chilling on the bench in an open space without any chains on them. Are they raised or wild?! Not sure about it. Anyway, that is cool and I am loving it.

All the green with one red spot. And that is the macaw in the park.

They are probably in a relationship. As far as I know, the macaw is a monogamous animal.

After the macaw section, there is a huge pond with lots of different species. Including ducks, swans, and turtles. The most eye-catching among all of them is nothing more than this duck, which looks exactly like the famous scientist Einstein. The white feathers and its explosive hairstyle are really a thing here.

After passing by the pond, there is a series that shows different kinds of birds. You can learn a lot just by walking past and reading the information on the board. The ones I know better will be the toucan and crane. At the time I visit, there are many newborns around. They are so cute and it is a rare moment.

You can see the babies are in the middle of the nest.
They are carefully taken care of by their parents, and with little time, they are gonna be really to leave.

yummy yummy

In this animal and environmentally friendly place, it is normal to see the animal that walks around in the park. The one that caught my eyes is the bird that in the cover of this article. The bird can not fly and is a size bigger than a chicken but slightly smaller than a turkey. They do not really make any noise but keep eating things from the ground. Like walking around in a group. It is quite cute when you spend more time on them. Not sure what species is that. If anyone knows it, please comment below and let me know.

Eating eating eating...

Except for birds, there are few mammals around. For example, some goats, cows, and deers are in the park. Seeing them chewing the hay and having fun in the park makes me so satisfied. Watching them living like a pro here just makes me surprised this is a free visit. Who is paying for all this and making the park run smoothly? Don't know, but thank you.

yummy yummy

How is it? Making the hay all over the body.

Got you, it is you!!

In addition to the common mammals, what is even more amazing about this place is that there are animals that are hard to find in Europe. A variety of different kinds of monkeys, ring-tailed lemurs, and mountains cat. Oh my god, this place is really cool.

It takes you about 1-2 hours to walk through the entire park. The path in the park was planned well. And the sign is clear. Although the venue isn't huge, it is not crowded at all because there at not many tourists. Very comfortable.

When walking around in the park, there is a story that I want to share about it. I run into a family of ducks hanging and having fun by the pond. Although there is a fence, the baby ducklings who have just been born, can shuttle freely in and out of the fence and not be restricted by it. So sometimes the ducklings are outside of the fence without notice. And they lose their way. Have a cute little video about it.

The duckling is nervous. He can hear the sound but can not find his mom instead.

Briefly summarize the park(zoo) in Wels, Upper Austria. This is a place in the urban area, If you live in this city, you can approach it even if you don't have transportation. In addition, this attraction does not require any fees, which is awesome. You can visit it every day if you want. The path and sections in the park are clear and friendly to all ages. Basically, there are no stairs in it. It is recommended that you who live nearby can come and visit whenever you have the opportunity.

In the end, let us end this trip with a video of my friend and me having fun dancing with the birds. PEACE!!
